Wind Turbine Blade Designs
Wind turbines are one of the oldes known devices used for power generation. Although the basic idea behind wind generators has remained constant, wind turbine blades in particular have seen drastic changes over time, from the easily broken windmill blades of yore to the sleek blades of today. Today, wind turbines generate much more power from much less wind than ever before, and this is largely thanks to these improvements.
Early wind turbine blades were essentially nothing more than large mats made from reeds. Their main drawback was a lack of durability. The short lifespan of this kind of blade led inventors to look for other options.
Reed blades would eventually be replaced by lighter and more durable cloth sails. This kind of blade was used in combination with a vertical axis design to create some of the early windmills, which were used to process grain with the help of wind power.
Later, horizontal axis wind turbines came into use, in many cases using blades made of wood. This development mirrored those seen in the world of aviation, as improving rotors often shared similar characteristics. Wooden blades were sturdier yet lighter than previous models, and therefore they could spin at a higher speed and provide more power to the connected machinery.
Electricity was produced from wind turbines for the first time thanks to these designs. The first wind turbines of this type were relatively small in size, but it wasn’t long before they were scaled up and used in commerical settings.
At this time, the difference between horizontal axis turbine blades and vertical axis turbine blades became even more distinct. With regard to horizontal axis blade design, the majority of the changes would take the form of differences in blade shape and pitch, materials, and the number of blades used per rotor.
In most cases, 3-blade designs are the norm for horizontal axis wind turbines, as they provide the best balance of stability and rotor speed. In many current turbines, composite blades are used, which are extremely strong and flexible in addition to being lightweight, which makes them ideal for both residential and commercial uses. Unlike older turbines, these new turbines can both spin faster and pick up winds of lower velocity.
Some of the most interesting and effective designs available today can be found on vertical axis wind turbines. The rotation for these units is usually provided by aspects that take advantage of wind drag or wind lift.
Regardless of the direction of the wind, current vertical axis turbines will always convert it into energy. Thanks to this feature, vertical axis turbines provide the most consistent output of power of any variety currently available. What’s more, as vertical axis turbines usually don’t require a tower, they’re frequently preferred by residential users.
