Even for those not interested in these topics, books, cookbooks, and magazine subscriptions tend to be perhaps the safest and one of the most rewarding of all choices for both kids and adults. How green the choice is one of debate (given the use of wood for paper and fuel for delivery), but heck, you may not want to over think that one too much. Amazon.com and many other book retailers now have programs where if you order certain books online you can immediately start reading an electronic version online for a small extra price (usually less than $5). This is actually a great way to give a book and have a copy for yourself as well - what a deal!
