E. Coli Outbreak Sickens Several Nationwide

According the Center’s for Disaese and Control (CDC), two people have died and twenty-eight people across the nation have become ill after eating meat contaminated with the same strain of E. Coli bacteria. Of the twenty people who have become ill, sixteen have been hospitalized and three are experiencing kidney failure.

All Canadians to Get H1N1 Flu Vaccine

This week, Canadian Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq, announced that Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada will be able to offer every Canadian citizen a H1N1 flu vaccination (the AREPANRIX vaccine produced by Canadian manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline). Such a capacity is in in stark contrast to the United States where vaccinations are scarce and, when available, are generally only to be given to high risk groups including pregnant women, infants, young children, and adults with specific preexisting conditions.

Report Identifies Ten Riskiest Foods

A report by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has identified the top ten riskiest foods regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The foods on the list are those that accounted for the most reports of foodborne illnesses and deaths characterized as outbreaks according to the Center's for Disease Control (CDC) between 1990 and 2006.

According to a report issued today by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), smoking bans in restaurants, workplaces, and other public please have reduced the risk of heart disease in non-smokers.

Flaws in Beef Inspection Policies Dangerous to Consumers

Flaws in the current beef inspection policies can lead to debilitating illness. Such policies, according to the New York Times, contribute to practices within the beef industry which led to a vibrant 22 year old becoming paralyzed after eating hamburger meat contaminated with a dangerous strain of E. coli bacteria.
