Consumers Should Worry About BPA Says NIH Director

In interviews and testimony to congress last week, Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Toxicology Program, said that consumers should "absolutely" be worried about bisphenol A (BPA) and its potential effects on human health.

Toys Continue to Contain Dangerous Chemicals

On Tuesday, Healthystuff.org released the results of their 2009 testing of thousands of toys on store shelves for dangerous chemicals. While the report does suggest that the toy industry has made some progress in reducing the percentage of toys with some dangerous chemicals like lead, the report shows that contamination continues to be widespread and suggests that consumers should do more checking to see if specific items have been found to contain dangerous amounts of certain chemicals

Website Helps Consumers Avoid Dangerous Toys

As part of their annual "Trouble in Toyland" report, the Illinois Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) announced on Tuesday that they have created an interactive website and smart phone tool that will allow consumers to report potentially dangerous toys. As part of their efforts they also produced a shoppers guide designed to help parents identify dangerous toys.

More Thoughtful and Green Gift-Giving Possible Trend of the Season

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), the most common items consumers plan to give this Holiday/ Christmas season are clothing, books, and gift cards. More than 50% of all consumers questioned as part of their annual Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions survey said they planned to give one or all of these items. Other popular items included toys, electronics, and personal care items.

Deaths Prompt Largest Crib Recall in History

After 110 incidents of infant injury including four deaths, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that together with Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, it is recalling more than two million drop side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo.
