Cancer Treatment May be Diminished by Use of Antioxidants

A new study by researchers from Columbia University provides more evidence of a problematic link between cancer and the use of antioxidants. Although a number of studies have shown that the use of antioxidants can diminish the effectiveness of chemotherapy, the findings by these researchers suggest that physicians may still be reluctant to communicate the potential link to patients and/or many cancer patients may be ignoring the possibility that such a link exists.

Newsweek Takes on Oprah's Promotion of Questionable Health Practices

This week the magazine Newsweek published an extensive story chronicling Oprah Winfrey's allowing several Hollywood stars and non-scientists to come on her show to promote possibly dangerous health practices and criticizing her apparent endorsement of them. Singled out were appearances by Hollywood star Suzanne Somers and former Playboy bunny Jenny McCarthy.

New Guidelines for Weight Gain During Pregnancy

For the first time in more than twenty years the US Institute of Medicine (IOM) has released new guidelines related to weight gain and pregnancy. Reasons cited for the new guidelines include significant progress with respect to research on weight gain and pregnancy, increased diversity of the US population, and an increased number of obese women in the country.

Tougher Nationwide BPA Regulations Could be Coming

On Tuesday, Democrats in on the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg asking the agency to review its August report which said that bisphenol A (BPA) was safe at the levels commonly used to make plastic bottles and containers. On Wednesday, Hamburg agreed to the review.

World Health Organization Pushes for Using Health Danger Images on Cigarette Packs

As part of their "Tobacco Free Initiate" and "World NO Tobacco Day", the World Health Organization (WHO) is advocating that all countries adopt policies that require cigarette manufacturers to include graphic photos depicting the potential effects of tobacco on packaging.
