CRITICAL MUST DO #3: Be very careful about medications, herbs and vitamins – including over the counter medications.
All medications, vitamins and herbs are chemicals and some can be quite dangerous to young infants and the developing fetus. If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant seek medical care immediately to discuss what medications, vitamins and herbs you are currently using. Many substances that are perfectly fine to use before and after pregnancy are absolute no-no’s when you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. Knowledge is absolutely key on this one so in addition to seeing your doctor, if at all possible get a good reference book that allows you to look up what you are taking and determine if it is safe.

9. Clean your water.
Although most water in the United States is safe, some areas have levels of heavy metals and other chemicals that may be harmful to young infants and to the developing fetus. There are also many problems associated with bottled water including unwelcomed exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) and other chemicals. Given these somewhat contradictory challenges, the best choice if you are at all concerned about your water may be to purchase a water filter for your home and then, when taking it with you, put it in a non-plastic/ BPA free container like a stainless steel water bottle.

6. Eat more organic food.
Traditionally farmed food often contains pesticides and hormones. Although research is varied with respect to the specific effects on pregnancy and the developing fetus when these chemicals are consumed at relatively low levels, studies using non-human animals have consistently shown these chemicals to cause problems in pregnancy, in the developing fetus, and in young animals. As such, the most conservative approach is to try to avoid these chemicals as much as possible by purchasing more organic produce, dairy, meats, and food products.
