Fifteen Living the Science Safe and Green Gift Ideas
Tuesday, 24 November 2009 00:00
Giving safe and green gifts isn't tough to do. Here are some ideas and some resources for finding safer and greener gifts this holiday season.
1. Books and Cookbooks
See our books section for additional recommendations for specific books and cookbooks devoted to the topic of toxins and health, green living, organic cooking, and organic gardening. Even for those not interested in these topics, books, cookbooks, and magazine subscriptions tend to be perhaps the safest and one of the most rewarding of all choices for both kids and adults. How green the choice is one of debate (given the use of wood for paper and fuel for delivery), but heck, you may not want to over think that one too much. Amazon.com and many other book retailers now have programs where if you order certain books online you can immediately start reading an electronic version online for a small extra price (usually less than $5). This is actually a great way to give a book and have a copy for yourself as well - what a deal!

6. Stainless Steel Water Bottles

Stainless steel water bottles are super cool - they look great and they are a safe alternative to plastic water bottles which often break down and can leach chemicals into your water. Amazon.com is hands down, one of the best places to buy any size and color stainless steel water bottleof your choosing.

11. Non-Toxic Toys
Given the ongoing reports of lead, BPA, and phalates in toys, it may be worth it to choose toys that have been tested for these chemicals or are made from only organic materials (wood, bamboo, etc...). A good choice in terms of being safe and fairly green are board games - providing they don't have small plastic or metal components. You can also get toys that have been tested as being lead free and BPA free. Generally online purchasing will be about the only way to make this determination. In this instance buying from some place like Amazon.com can make the most sense although for some items like lunch boxes - manufacturers are starting to actually indicate "lead free" on the packaging.
