Dietary Supplements Dangerous When Taking Heart Medications
Monday, 01 February 2010 15:22
Popular supplements like St. John’s Wort and Ginko Biloba may interact with some drugs proscribed for heart disease and in turn, increase their potency – especially in the elderly.

According to a review published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, when taken along with prescription medication for heart problems, herbal remedies can lead to serious consequences including problems with heart rate and blood clotting.

The review, written by researchers from the Mayo Clinics in Arizona and Minnesota, suggested that the elderly are at particularly high risk for experiencing dangerous interactions because they are most likely to be on multiple medications and are also more likely to take herbal remedies.

To combat potentially dangerous interactions, the study researchers, along with experts at the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Center’s for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that consumers be more diligent about talking with health care providers about supplement use. In addition, the NIH is funding more research focused on examining such interactions.

Consumers can learn more about supplements and about steps they can take to help ensure their personal safety when using supplements by reviewing the “Using Dietary Supplements Wisely” information pages on the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine’s Website.
