Deaths Prompt Largest Crib Recall in History
Monday, 23 November 2009 19:46
After 110 incidents of infant injury including four deaths, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that together with Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, it is recalling more than two million drop side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo.

Deaths related to the cribs resulted from an infant getting caught between the bed part of the crib and the drop down side of the crib. According to the CPSC, the cribs that resulted in death "had broken, missing, or deformed claws, connectors, tracks, or flexible tab stops; loose or missing metal spring clips; stripped screws; and/or drop-sides installed upside-down".

In their recall, the CPSC urged parents to stop using the cribs and to wait for a free repair kit which Stork Craft is sending to consumers who request it. According to CPSC, all of the problems with the cribs hardware can cause the drop-side to detach. In their recall notice the CPSC said,  "when the drop-side detaches, it creates space between the drop-side and the crib mattress. The bodies of infants and toddlers can become entrapped in the space which can lead to suffocation. Complete detachment of drop-sides can lead to falls from the crib".

The repair kit can be ordered from Stork Craft toll-free at (877) 274-0277. More details about the recall can be viewed at www.storkcraft.com.
