Gore Calls for Massive Green Building Effort
Friday, 13 November 2009 05:29
Speaking at "Greenbuild", former Vice President Al Gore called for a massive effort aimed at constructing green buildings. Such efforts are generally thought to be safer for the outdoor environment due to conservation of energy and decreased carbon emissions and are also considered safer for its occupants due to the use of safer building materials which can reduce exposure to health endangering chemicals like PBDEs and PCBs.

Greenbuild is touted as being the largest sustainable design conference in the world. The conference, which runs through November 13th in Phoenix, Arizona, includes dozens of speakers and is sponsored mostly by businesses that produce green building materials.

In his address to convention goers, Gore stressed that building green buildings and retrofitting existing spaces has the potential to better the environment while at the same time providing jobs and boosting the economy. As evidence of a massive movement underway to make homes and building spaces more environmental friendly both during construction and afterwards, Gore also talked about the success of the green building products and services industries which have grown from $7 billion in 2005 to $12 billion in 2007 and are projected to jump to $60 billion in 2010.

Calling on Americans to join him and others pushing for more and more green building as a way to address the current crisis which has both environmental and economic components, Gore said, "We as Americans have the capacity to do what we put our minds to. We have the ability to solve this crisis. We can do it."

As part of his address, Gore gave away thousands of copies of his new book: Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis.
