Breast Cancer Risk Reduced by Some Lifestyle Choices
Thursday, 03 September 2009 07:09
Results from the largest review of research on the relationship between lifestyle choices and breast cancer risk confirms that a significant number of breast cancer cases could be prevented each year. The review shows that maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, reducing alcohol intake, and, for women, breastfeeding children, can all significantly reduce breast cancer risk and may prevent more than 70,000 breast cancer cases each year.

The review, conducted by the American Institute for Cancer Research/World Cancer Research Fund (AICR/WCRF) is an update to the "Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective" expert report published by the AICR and WCRF in 2007. The update evaluates another 81 studies on the topic published since the original report was released and will be published on the Expert Report website at: www.dietandcancerreport.org.

According to the AICR release about the upcoming report, the update reinforces existing recommendations which include: 1) That people aim to be "as lean as possible without being underweight"; 2) That people try to be "physically active for at least 30 minutes every day"; 3) That men limit their alcohol intake to no more than two drinks per day and women to no more than one drink per day; and 4) "That mothers breastfeed exclusively for up to six months and then add other liquids and foods".
