| Safer Sunscreens Key in Protecting Health |
| Monday, 27 July 2009 06:36 |
Want to protect your skin and that of your family while staying away from harsh chemicals? Once again, research by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) suggests that doing so is much harder than you may think.
This year, EWG investigated 489 sunscreens and found that 3 in 5 contained potentially harmful chemicals (e.g. oxybenzone, a hormone disruptor) and/or failed to adequately protect the skin from harmful rays. Perhaps most disturbing were EWG findings that some of the worst sunscreens in terms of chemicals and/or failure with respect to sun protection were the best sellers and included brands like Coppertone, Banana Boat, and Neutrogena. EWG is a Washington DC based non-profit organization that advocates on Capital Hill for "health-protective and subsidy-shifting policies". Read their complete review.
