Fat Intake Linked with Pancreatic Cancer
Sunday, 28 June 2009 09:11
Neon Burger SignResults published this week appear to confirm what has long been suspected, ingestion of large amounts of fat/fatty acids from dairy and red meat sources increases an individuals risk for some types of cancer.

Using data collected as part of the National Institutes of Health–AARP Diet and Health Study, researchers from the National Institutes of Health looked at the link between fat intake and being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The study included more than 500,000 men and women who had completed diet questionnaires in 1995 or 1996 for whom information about pancreatic cancer was available about six years later.

After adjusting models for the occurrence of other factors commonly linked with increased cancer rates including smoking status, body mass index (BMI), and diabetes, the researchers found that individuals with high amounts of fat intake -- especially from dairy and red meat sources, were at a 19% or higher increased risk for being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer compared to individuals with low levels of fat intake.

Results from the study were published online this week by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
