Fifteen Living the Science Safe and Green Gift Ideas
Tuesday, 24 November 2009 00:00
Giving safe and green gifts isn't tough to do. Here are some ideas and some resources for finding safer and greener gifts this holiday season.
1. Books and Cookbooks
See our books section for additional recommendations for specific books and cookbooks devoted to the topic of toxins and health, green living, organic cooking, and organic gardening. Even for those not interested in these topics, books, cookbooks, and magazine subscriptions tend to be perhaps the safest and one of the most rewarding of all choices for both kids and adults. How green the choice is one of debate (given the use of wood for paper and fuel for delivery), but heck, you may not want to over think that one too much. Amazon.com and many other book retailers now have programs where if you order certain books online you can immediately start reading an electronic version online for a small extra price (usually less than $5). This is actually a great way to give a book and have a copy for yourself as well - what a deal!

2. Organic Gift Baskets
If you tend to give gift baskets why not make them organic this year? Amazon.com and many other retailers offer many options and allow you to request that your choices be organic. Some specific types of organic food gift baskets offered by Amazon.com include assortments with chocolate, cheeses, gourmet foods, cooking oils and vinegars, and coffee.

3. Organic and Natural Personal Care Products
The number of choices of natural personal care products are nearly endless. One way to start is to decide on a price range and perhaps even a retailer of choice. Amazon.com has a ton of options for organic perfumes, colognes, cosmetics, soaps, and lotions and their shipping practices are pretty easy and super quick. For a bit nicer products and gift packs you may want to try Beautoriumor Origins. Origins is of exceptional quality - more like what you get with department store lines like Clinique, Lancome, and Estee Lauder (Origins is also available at many department stores but tends to be cheaper online when purchased directly from Origins).

4. Organic Wine and Spirits
Why not take this opportunity (if you haven't already) to sample organic wines and spirits and give them as gifts as well. Although the selection of organic wine and spirits is minimal both in stores and online, using a local or online merchant can help you insure that your selection is a good one. If you don't have a local supplier you may want to consider using an online one. If you live in California (or elsewhere) and are planning a trip to the Napa Valley or any other wine regions, consider searching out the organic vineyards. This is a great way to introduce yourself to specific makers and their wines. Although organic wines are sometimes hard to find there are a few good buying guides out there that can help you identify quality makers and vintages.

5. Organic Clothing
Clothing made from organic materials including organically farmed cotton, bamboo, and hemp is becoming easier and easier to find and is even showing up in places you wouldn't suspect like in designer jeans. Online retailers tend to be a pretty good resource for finding clothing made out of organic fabrics given that in many traditional stores items made out of these materials are scattered among other clothes so finding them is tougher. Amazon.com is a pretty good resource for these kinds of items (baby clothes, kids clothes, juniors, men's clothing, women's clothing). Although the selection is smaller, you can also find these types of items at more and more retail stores.
