Fifteen Living the Science Safe and Green Gift Ideas: Part Two

< Previous Page

6. Stainless Steel Water Bottles

Stainless steel water bottles are super cool - they look great and they are a safe alternative to plastic water bottles which often break down and can leach chemicals into your water. They come in all sort of colors and sizes and you can even get bottles with sippy tops for babies and toddlers. Amazon.com is hands down, one of the best places to buy any size and color stainless steel water bottleof your choosing.

7. Safer Cookware
If you or anyone you know is still using non-stick cookware (a pretty big no no considering research showing that the non-stick stuff gets into your food - and then into you), stainless steel, copper, or cast iron pots and pans may be the perfect gift (for you or for them). Cast iron pans can actually be good for you - we all actually need iron in our diets and the fact that it also leaches into food can actually boost your iron levels.

8. Organic Food Delivery
Many organic food delivery services offer gift certificates and/or allow you to prepay for weeks or months of delivery. These types of services can be used for regular deliveries to homes or offices. Companies like Farm Fresh to You and Planet Organics allow you to select specific items for ongoing delivery (like having fruit and nuts delivered to offices). If interested and neither of these companies are near you (or you want to try an alternative), try finding something through Local Harvest. They have a large listing of food cooperatives and farms that will deliver directly to homes and businesses.

9. Bamboo Goods
Bamboo is an incredibly useful material and its use is catching on in the manufacture of many different kinds of products. Bamboo is easily farmed (doesn't require special pesticides, doesn't require a great deal of water, grows rapidly), and can be converted into many types of products fairly easily. You can now find toys, serving bowls, cutting boards, sheets, towels, and all types of clothing made from bamboo (not to mention its varied uses in building materials).

10. Organic Plants and Trees
Like sending holiday plants or having them around the house? Consider organic alternatives. Want a gift that will really surprise someone - consider sending a fruit tree - it will continue giving for years to come (before ordering be sure to make sure the tree you choose can be easily grown in the area where it will be planted).
