Green Cleaning

Given how profitable the green living market has become, finding non-toxic, vegetable-based/biodegradable cleaning products has become easier than ever. These days you can find safe/non-toxic/biodegradable alternatives for every kind of cleaner you can imagine -- that is unless you shop only at the big box stores (and non-toxic alternatives are even popping up there).

If you haven't already switched to non-toxic/biodegradable alternatives you may want to consider a similar overhaul of your cleaning materials as was suggested for your personal care products. At the very least the next time you run out of any cleaning product seriously consider a non-toxic alternative. Most of the cleaners, detergents, and soaps we were raised on contain phthalates, surfactants, and potent solvents – many types of which have been shown to be dangerous to development. As such, making this change is particularly important if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have children in the house.

This is one area where most of our Living the Science families agree that they have been able to successfully switch over to safe/non-toxic/biodegradable alternatives for just about everything from laundry detergent to window cleaner to dishwasher detergent. We are all huge fans of Method products which can actually be purchased at Target and many other stores. The selection is a bit better online but heck, get them where ever you can find them. Another great brand is Mrs. Meyers. This line of products is especially fragrant -- which we like given that things smell like lavender or lemon verbena for up to a few days after cleaning.
